Hearing His Voice

Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!  Psalm 46:10

My grandfather's light hearted stories and laughter use to light up my parents living room.  His stories captivated me as a child, but even more so as an adult looking back.

One story from his childhood always stands out in my memory.

Papa’s love for the outdoors began at a young age when he began exploring his family’s small farm in Vermont.  One day he went outside to explore, with a magnifying glass in hand.  When he came across an interesting leaf he sat down and studied it carefully.

He told me that as the sun hit the leaf, all the cells were bursting with light.  The beauty of God's creation amazed him.  In that moment, he knew without a doubt that God was real and speaking to his heart.

Isn’t it amazing how God uses simple things to show us his love?

In the Bible we read about God speaking in some very loud and miraculous ways, like with Moses and the burning bush.  However, His voice can also come like a quiet whisper in our hearts.

The Bible tells us in Psalm 46:10, be still and know that I am God.

In the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, it is hard to slow down and find time to be still and quiet, but God is desperate to communicate with us.  The truth is, we were not meant to travel life's journey alone.  He wants to assure us of his love and guide us in our journey to serve him.

Sometimes God speaks to us in the oddest places when we least expect it.  For example, I always seem to hear him the clearest when I am driving and singing praises on the way to work.  It's like my own personal worship service in the car.  :)

So here is a challenge for all of us, including me.  Every one ready?

Find that quiet place where God can speak to your heart.  God made us all unique, so while one person might enjoy going for a quiet walk, another person might prefer to use a prayer closet in their home.  Whatever works, try to make listening for God's voice a priority each day.

Please feel free to  comment and share ways you have found to include quiet time into your daily life.  :)

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and God bless.

  1. Thank you, Rachel, for this post. My quiet place is out on the deck, surrounded by God's creation. It's the place where I worship best.

    1. Rebecca, that sounds like a beautiful place to worship. If I am alone, I like to go for walks or just sit outside as well. One of my favorite times is when it is snowing outside. Everything is covered in white and all the sounds from the road are muffled. I love how God uses subtle ways of showing us his love. Thanks for your comment. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. :)
      God bless.

  2. I like to worship, too, out in God's beautiful creation. I also love to just stand at a window or door and look out and talk or sing to the Father. Very soul-satisfying times indeed.

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Rachel!
