Putting God in the Driver's Seat

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6

I’m a horrible backseat driver. I’m sure some of you can relate. New Year’s Day my family and I traveled two hours away to visit my sister’s household. On the way back the weather turned sour with blowing snow and slick roads.

Despite the fact that my husband is an excellent driver, I found myself telling him to slow down and started gasping if another car got to close to our bumper. At times I wished I had a steering wheel on the passenger side to help out.  When we arrived home a few hours later I felt guilty for criticizing his driving.  He knew the road well and got us home safely.

Sometimes I’m guilty of backseat driving in my spiritual life as well. God is in the driver’s seat but when the storms of life hit or things go too fast or too slow for my liking, I start to question his driving ability.  I try to take over.

With that in mind, instead of starting the year with a resolution, I decided to start with a prayer instead.  I simply asked God to guide my life and help me follow his will in the New Year.  In 2014, I want my goals to be aligned with his plans for my life.  He’s the driver, so I’ll let him lead.  After all, he knows the road better than I do.

What are some goals you have for 2014?  Please feel free to share.  J

Thank you for reading and keep shining for Him!

  1. Great post! I have an invisible brake on my side of the car I push through the floorboard when my husband is driving! And unfortunately, I also take the same approach with God at times. I have to remind myself He does not need my help! Thanks for the reminder.

  2. Oh my, I think I've been a backseat driver with God, too. Good food for thought, Rachel. God bless as you seek to follow His will this year!

  3. Rachel, Time and time again I try to take the wheel....trusting God should be so easy especially when I've seen the awesome way God works! When I look back I say "silly me" because I know that if I had just let go and let God work things would have been so much easier!
Thanks for your insight and it's perfect for this time of year when everyone is making resolutions.....just follow God's lead and you will succeed!
    Blessings to you

    1. It is really hard to hand him the wheel sometimes. I catch myself doing the same thing sometimes when things don't seem to be going the way I thought. I know that He has everything in his control and our best interests at heart though. Thank you for commenting and God bless. :)
