Made for a Purpose: A Lesson I Learned from Hummingbirds
I will praise
You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul
knows very well.
Psalm 139:14
The lives of hummingbirds have always
captivated me. A few months ago I
watched a documentary about hummingbirds living in the South America
rainforest. Each of the little birds had qualities that made them unique. One bird in particular,
called the Sword Billed Hummingbird grabbed my attention.
It has the longest beak of all the hummingbird species. In fact, its beak is actually longer than its
body.
God created this hummingbird with a
special purpose in mind. It is the only
hummingbird with a beak long enough to drink nectar out of some flowers in the
rainforest. One article I read about
them said the flowers would die without the little bird pollinating them (Johnson). Isn’t God’s creation amazing? Everything in nature is so intricately planned
out and balanced.
Learning about this special bird reminds
me of how God sees me. Sometimes I
am tempted to compare myself to others.
I think that someone else could have done a task far better than
me. However, when I think of
hummingbirds, God reminds me that “I have been fearfully and wonderfully made”
(Psalms 139:14). I’ve been made for a
special purpose and whatever task he has called me to do, big or small, was for
Me to do, not someone else.
Similar to hummingbirds,
we all have special jobs that God has asked us to do. 1 Corinthians 12:4-5 says, "There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord." God has made each of us unique, with gifts
and talents to accomplish His work. We were made for a purpose, to use our gifts to reflect His light.

ReplyDeleteWe are not cookie cutter, or carbon copies of each other, but a seperate individual.
God has given us each specific gifts to share....sometimes we neglect to share it with others and lose out on the blessings.
Thank you Rachel for obeying God and writing what He puts on your heart!
Thank you, Mom. I'm glad you received a blessing from reading it. I love reading your comments every week. You are such an encouragement to me.
